These tools aim to make it easier to create apps for ARM devices. The Redmond company tries to bring up everything the developer needs to work with the open hardware ecosystem. For that, it offers its popular programming tools and languages, including Visual Studio 2022, .NET 6, .NET Framework, WSL, WSA, Windows Terminal, C++, Java, Python, Node JS , Git, and others, which are familiar to many.
Visual Studio 2022 for ARM64
Today the native ARM64 Visual Studio release has become available for download. It requires Windows 11, and is dubbed as Visual Studio 2022 17.3 Preview 2.
The update includes support for the following features:
- Development of desktop applications in C++ (projects based on MSBuild).
- Development of .NET desktop applications (WinForms and WPF) using both the .NET Framework and modern .NET.
- .NET and web development.
A full release of the tools should take place before the end of the current calendar year.
ARM64 support by platform components
Certain components in the set already support ARM64 for some time. The Microsoft Visual C++ (MSVC) toolkit allows compiling natively without emulation. Many C++ libraries, including Vcpkg, also already have native ARM64 support. .NET 6 supports ARM64 from its initial release. The appropriate support will come to the .NET Framework with the release of .NET Framework 4.8.1. The latter will be included in Windows 11 version 22H2.
You can download Visual Studio 2022 17.3 Preview 2 from the official Microsoft website. When installing, select the edition of Visual Studio, it will download the IDE version that matches your hardware architecture. The official announcement is here.
