Microsoft is currently investigating a problem reported by Windows 10/11 users who activated their operating systems using valid keys from Windows 7/8. Some of them experienced deactivation after replacing new PC components or updating the BIOS. In some cases, Microsoft's technical support has suggested purchasing a new OS license.
The company is aware of these complaints and is looking into the matter. Experts have explained that this issue arose when Microsoft recently attempted to block a loophole that allowed users to activate Windows 10/11 with older Windows 7/8 keys.
As a result, users who undergo hardware changes may encounter difficulty reactivating their systems. Microsoft clarified that Windows 10 product keys can still activate Windows 11 on PCs that officially support the OS, but the free upgrade offer using Windows 7/8 keys is no longer available.
Microsoft's free upgrade offer to Windows 10/11 ended on July 29, 2016. The installation path for obtaining a free update using Windows 7 and Windows 8 keys has now been removed. Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 remains free, Microsoft said.
