Microsoft has announced a new version of the Bing search engine that comes bundled with the latest version of the ChatGPT chatbot from OpenAI. As you could expect, Microsoft Edge will also have AI-powered features via tighter integration with Bing.
“It’s a new day in search,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at the event announcing the products. His point is that the paradigm for web search hasn’t changed in decades, but that AI can deliver information more fluidly and quickly than traditional methods.

“The race starts today, and we’re going to move and move fast. Most importantly, we want to have a lot of fun innovating again in search, because it’s high time.”
That's why Bing will have a chatbot, probably based on the GPT-4 language model (ChatGPT uses GPT-3.5). The company believes that artificial intelligence in the search engine will help users get the information they need faster. Unlike ChatGPT, the Bing chatbot will have access to up-to-date information about the world.
In the new Bing, users will be able to type in queries up to 1,000 characters long and receive annotated AI-generated responses that appear next to regular search results.
The key features of the new Bing
- New user interface.
- Bing is now powered by OpenAI's next-generation Logic Learning Machine (LLM), specifically designed for search engines. It is more powerful than ChatGPT.
- A new way to work with OpenAI called the "Prometheus" model that improves relevancy, annotates answers, makes them more relevant, and more.
- Improved search indexing baselines by applying an AI model to the main search algorithm. This is a significant improvement made to data relevance ever.
AI-powered Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge browser will have a new sidebar to quickly navigate to the Bing chatbot.
It will allow you to ask the bot directly about the open page or document. It will be able to provide summary information about an open 15-page PDF file. This is called "chat" mode.
Another feature, "compose", works like a writing assistant in Edge. It will help you to generate text from your emails, social media posts, based on a few starting prompts. More than that, it can read a code snippet you found on Stack Overflow, and then rewrite it for you using a different programming language.
Bing preview is available today for a limited number of users. To try it, visit bing.com/new
(now shows a waitlist that you can join). The mobile version of the new Bing will appear in the coming weeks.
Finally, a new build of Microsoft Edge with Bing integration is rolling out to the Dev channel.
