Microsoft Teams desktop app may be coming to the Microsoft Store in May 2022

The Microsoft Teams desktop app could be available in the Microsoft Store as early as May 2022. This follows from the updated roadmap for Microsoft 365. As it is not an exact schedule, it can be adjusted back and forth. So there is a chance to see it in the Store even earlier.

Microsoft's intention is to provide the similar experience Windows 11 user have to those who run Windows 10. As you may already know, Windows 11 includes a special consumer version of Teams called "Chat". The app comes pre-installed and pinned by default to the taskbar.

Windows 11 chat app

Windows 10 has nothing like that. Until now the only way to get Teams in this OS was the download from the official website. This has changed.

However, the Store app won't be a Windows 10 exclusive. It will support both versions of the OS, though its features will slightly vary. The Windows 10 version will support personal, work, and school Microsoft accounts, while the Windows 11 version will only work with work and school accounts. This is mentioned in the roadmap.

Microsoft Teams app for work, school and life will soon be available to download from Microsoft store. This app will support work, school and consumer accounts on Windows 10 and Work or school accounts on Windows 11.

It looks like the built-in Chat will remain the only way to use a personal account on Windows 11.

Those who don't plan to use Chat/Teams on Windows 11, can unpin it from the taskbar or completely uninstall the app.
