Microsoft has released an updated version of the Paint app (version 11.2306.28.0) to Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev and Canary channels. It brings with it a new tool that allows removing the image background with a couple of clicks.
As of this writing, Microsoft yet to announce this feature officially. The official announcement doesn't reveal much details. But there is a change that it uses artificial intelligence to recognize and split objects in the foreground from the background. Clicking on a new toolbar button does the trick.
The result is an image with an object on a white background. You can also use the rectangle select to specify an area that you want to remove the background on. Unfortunately, Paint still doesn't support layers. So you won't be able to save the main image object to PNG with a transparent background.
Another notable thing in this version of Paint is a banner with the text "Microsoft Confidential . Features in this version of Paint are confidential. Do not share, discuss, or take screenshots." According to Brandon LeBlanc, senior manager of the Windows Insider program, this Paint update was originally planned for insiders, but they forgot to remove the banner. The quickly released update has already removed this message.
Please note that an earlier version of this update (version 11.2306.28.0) went live earlier today and includes a bug where a confidentality banner is shown. The newer update (version 11.2306.30.0) will correct the issue.
