Windows 11 Open Extended Context Menu in File Explorer

Windows 11 brings a galore of visual changes to its user interface and apps. The OS includesa new taskbar which shows the Start button and running apps aligned to the center. The look of the Start menu has been changed as well. It no longer includes live tiles and app groups.

Microsoft has also redesigned many built-in apps. Besides the new colorful icons, there are new controls and even features, like Focus Session in the Clock app. Windows 11 comes with a new Settings app. It does't list the categories on the start page. Instead, it directly shows them on the left.

The File Explorer app doesn't have the Ribbon any more. There is a new toolbar in place of it, that includes a static line of common actions.  It is much smaller, and looks touch friendly.

But the toolbar is not the only change in File Explorer. Everywhere in the OS, it shows the compact context menus by default. It only shows a few commonly used items in the right-click menu, while the rest of the items are hidden. To show them, you need to click on the Show advanced options command.

The Show advanced options entry has the Shift+F10 hotkey assigned, but not the item itself nor the hotkey open the extended items. The extended items include the classic Command Prompt, WSL to the current folder, open folder in a new process. and plenty of other lesser used but useful items. Earlier, you could access that menu by simply clicking on a file or folder with the Shift key pressed. But in Windows 11 the procedure is a bit different.

  1. Open File Explorer; press Win + E for that.
  2. Navigate to the directory location in which you want to open the extended context menu.
  3. Press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard and don't release it.

  5. Now, click on the Show more options item in the menu. This will open the menu containing all the previously hidden menu items.

That's how you can open the extended right-click menu on Windows 11. So, the only change here is that you have to hold the Shift key longer than before, until you click on the "advanced option" item.
