You see the lock screen after Windows 11 is started, before bring the Desktop for you. You need to dismiss it in order to select your user name and type your password. The same screen you see when you lock the computer (Win + L).
The next screen you see is called "sign-in screen". It lists your user accounts, and also shows the currently selected one in the center. Below the user name, you can type your password or choose a different method to sign-in like fingerprint.
With default settings, Windows 11 sign-in has the same wallpaper as the lock screen background image. However, Microsoft allows the user to get rid of that image and have the solid color background.
Disable Lock Screen Background on Sign-in Screen
To disable the lock screen background image on the sign-in screen, you can use three methods. The easiest method is to change the option in the Settings app. Alternatively, you can turn it off in the Registry, or even disable it for all users. Let's review these methods.
Disable Lock Screen Background on Sign-in Screen in Windows 11 Settings
- Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
- Select Personalization on the left.
- Click on Lock screen on the right side.
- On the next page, turn off the Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen option.
Done! You can re-enable the above mentioned option at any moment later. Keep in mind that this change only applies to the current user account only.
Alternatively, you can change this settings in the Registry.
Using the Registry tweak
To disable Lock Screen Background on Sign-in Screen in Windows 11 with a Registry tweak, you need to do the following.
- Find a security identifier (SID) for the user account.
- Change the HideLogonBackgroundImage DWORD value in the Registry for the SID.
Here is how you can get these tasks done.
Find the SID
Press Win+X and select Windows Terminal from the menu.
Now, type or copy-paste the following command:
wmic useraccount get domain,name,sid
Make note the SID value for the user account you want to turn off the background image on the sign-in screen. Now, you are ready to change the Registry.
Change the HideLogonBackgroundImage value for the user
- Press Win + R and type
regedit
in the Run box to open the Registry editor. - Navigate to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemProtectedUserData\<SID>\AnyoneRead\LockScreen
key. Replace the <SID> portion with the SID value you previously noted. - To the right of the LockScreen folder, change the HideLogonBackgroundImage DWORD value and set it to 1.
- If required, repeat the same steps for other users accounts you have in Windows 11.
You are done. BTW, you need to set the HideLogonBackgroundImage to 0 to re-enable the lock screen background on the login screen. Zero is the default value data used in Windows 11.
Disable Sign-in Screen Background Image for All Users
- Right-click the Start button, select Run, and enter the
regedit
command to open the Registry Editor. - Expand open the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
path in the left pane. - Right-click the System key and select New > DWORD (32-bit) value from the menu.
- Now, name the new value DisableLogonBackgroundImage and set it to 1.
- Restart Windows 11.
Done! Windows 11 will no longer have the background picture on the sign-in screen.
To save your time, I've prepared a couple of Registry files for you.
Ready-to-use REG files
Click here to download the ZIP archive with two *.reg files. Extract them to any folder of your choice.
Open the Disable_sign-in_screen_background_image.reg
file, and confirm the User Account Control prompt. This will disable the background image for all users.
The other file, Enable_sign-in_screen_background_image.reg
, will undo the change and make Windows 11 show the lock screen wallpaper on the sign-in page.
That's it.

The sign-in background image is easy to disable but the lock screen background image persists no matter what I do. The only way to “disable” it is to download a solid black wallpaper and use it as a lock screen background.
