Microsoft is working on several quality-of-life improvements for Xbox Wireless Controller owners. Soon, second-gen Xbox One gamepads will receive a new firmware that enables multi-device support, allowing users to switch between Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth devices without re-pairing gamepads. In addition to multi-device support, another new feature coming soon is an option to remap the Share button.
The Share button is available on third-gen Xbox Wireless Controllers Microsoft released alongside Xbox Series X|S. You can use the button to take screenshots (single press) or record videos (long press). Future firmware updates will let you change the default behavior.
Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Ring recently received a preview update that allows customizing the Share button through the Xbox Accessories app. Users can create custom shortcuts for single press, double press, and long press. Those who do not take screenshots or record videos can set the Share button to launch an app, control media playback, send a message, or check achievements for the current game. The Xbox Accessories app also lets you use the Share button as an accessibility shortcut to launch various tools that make gaming easier for people with disabilities.
Microsoft usually takes a couple of months to test new features in the Xbox Insider program before releasing them to all users in stable channels. If nothing goes wrong, expect the update for your Xbox Wireless Controller to arrive in a few months. Note that it will be available not only on Xbox consoles but also on Windows PCs.
You can use the Xbox Accessories app to update firmware on Xbox Wireless Controller via a USB cable or wirelessly if you use Xbox Wireless Adapter.
