Windows 10 was originally supposed to be the last Windows version, but Microsoft has changed their plans. Now we have Windows 11, but it looks like Windows 12 will follow. Various sources reports that Microsoft has set to begin its development.
Reportedly, Windows 12 will contain the following core elements, some of which are already included in Windows 11 and its 2022 successor "22H2".
- Mandatory Microsoft Account in Home and Pro
- Focus on TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, maybe even stronger than in Windows 11.
- Integration of the Microsoft Pluton security chip.
- Less legacy components here and there.
- Re-use of Windows 10X ideas and solutions.
As you may remember, upcoming builds of Windows 11 Professional, like the current Insider Preview and the Home Edition, will require a Microsoft account and can no longer be installed offline.
The German website WindowsUnited reports that Microsoft is about to build Windows 12 almost from scratch, without much borrowing from Windows 10. The idea is to build a modern, lightweight and efficient operating system, like it was intended with Windows 10X. This probably means that Store apps will be in priority, while the classic Desktop apps will run virtualized, like it was planned for Windows 10X.
It is worth noting that all the sources refer to some unnamed "internal sources" at Microsoft. There is no strong evidence or official confirmation for any of the statements. So, what we will see as the successor of Windows 11 may be a completely different thing. Via ComputerBase.

So we went from Windows 10 forever to new versions every few years again?
I bet it’s just an excuse for them to keep raising arbitrary CPU requirements. Windows 12 will now require 11th generation Intel CPUs minimum!
I miss the old Microsoft that cared about legacy support.
To be honest, I don’t believe these rumors. Sounds like an April Fool’s joke.
I think Windows 12 is coming. In five years or so. Windows 11 just came out. But the time where you owned the computer and OS is over. You buy a license and then they can do whatever they want with it.
Now they want your data. They’re not happy with what they’re already getting from Windows 10 and 11. If you want to use Windows, you have to put your tail between your legs and agree to everything! :/
The tweet that WindowsUnited referred to has been deleted, and the tweet author issued an apology when they shouldn’t. Because apparently “it’s going to require two TPMs” didn’t tip people off somehow.

So, this is all very clearly fake lmao.
Why not just called it Windows 10, since its NT version is 10.0 and their philosophy on the on OS as a “software as a service”, or otherwise simply Windows, when they finally killed their paid ESU for Windows 7 and supporting 8.1 on 2023, or base them on the codenames (a.k.a. Windows Sun Valley).
I’m sure enterprises (or I will say those under mission critical) will take more time to totally migrate to newer technology.
