Apart from adding questionable and controversial features to its browser, Microsoft is working on numerous quality-of-life improvements for Edge. After all, the company tries hard and goes out of its way to convert every user to Edge on every device, regardless of its operating system or power level. The latest update for Microsoft Edge Canary has brought yet another performance-boosting feature that will help the browser operate at the optimal level without abusing your hardware.

After installing Microsoft Edge Canary version 98.0.1093.0, users spotted a new “Performance detector” toggle in settings. It sits in the System section under the “Manage your performance” category. Microsoft is yet to provide official documentation about the new feature, but its brief description gives a quite clear explanation.
Microsoft Edge Performance Detector
Performance detector in Microsoft Edge will monitor tabs behavior. It will let the browser detect performance issues on open web pages and offer various recommendations to fix those problems. It appears that Microsoft plans to turn it on for all users
The description also has a “Learn more” link that leads to an old post on the official Windows Blogs website. There, Microsoft describes how Sleeping Tabs in the Edge browser allows users to save resources and improve performance. We assume Microsoft wants Edge to detect “hungry” tabs and show users a prompt to enable the Sleeping Tabs features to reduce RAM and CPU usage.
To highlight performance-improving features in Edge, Microsoft has also renamed the “System” section in Edge’s settings to “System and performance.”
Microsoft plans to ship Edge 98 to all users in the Stable channel on the week of February 3, 2021, but there is no guarantee whether Performance detector will make its path to the Stable channel in Edge 98.
