Microsoft offers a workaround for Outlook Desktop app crashes when sending emails

Microsoft has provided a temporary solution for a problem that causes the Outlook desktop app to crash when sending emails.

When you send an email from your account, Outlook crashes. This issue happens for users on the Current Channel (Preview) channel on build 17029.20028.

The initial customer reports about the crashes surfaced on November 20 on the Microsoft community website and various social networks. Users attempted to fix the issue by restarting, restoring Outlook, reinstalling the app, and creating a new profile for the affected email account, but these measures were reportedly ineffective. One user mentioned trying multiple solutions, including safe mode, a new profile, PST restore, and system restore, without success.

These problems are specific to Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Current Channel users using Outlook build 17029.20028.

Some customers were able to work around the problem by reinstalling Office. However, Microsoft suggests they revert to an earlier version. To do this, open a new command prompt as Administrator. Then paste the following commands into the Command Prompt and press Enter after each one:

  • cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun
  • officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.16924.20124

Last week, the company began rolling out fixes to some customers affected by another issue in Microsoft 365 related to “Something went wrong” sign-in errors [1001].

Microsoft has noted that the issue will be addressed in future builds 17029.20052+, although these updates are still on the way to the user.
