During today's presentation of Windows 11, Microsoft didn't say a word about the new File Explorer app. However, like many other parts of the OS, it has undergone a major overhaul. There are new icons and there is no ribbon interface.
The following screenshot demonstrates a brand new file manager running on Windows 11, without the now-traditional Ribbon toolbar. Instead, there is a tiny row of toolbar icons, something that reminds of Explorer in Windows XP.
Also, pay your attention to icons in the Quick Access area on the left. Those are not the icons we have now in Windows 10 and in the leaked build of the OS.
The new app looks optimized for touch, with controls for file and folder operations built into the top section. Unfortunately, the video doesn't expose other parts of File Explorer, so it is impossible to say what else has been updated.
Our high hopes to get our hands on this and other updated apps next week, when a public build of Windows 11 will become available.

Advertisеment
I really hope they bring tabs to File Explorer.
Cast to doesn’t work
Apply templates to all subfolders doesn’t work
Setting one folder template to the pull down choice (eg Music) doesn’t stick/work
Any guesses on how to set File Explorer behavior back to Win 10 mode?
I’m seeing focus on this registry folder, maybe in here (with proper registry attribute name and setting): Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
I have the opposite, mine is stuck on the legacy Windows 10 ribbon. I would be happy to compare registry values so you could try and re-enable the old ribbon
Try disabling “start Windows Explorer in separate process”
